About
The Californian quartet The Offspring was in a prime position to capitalize on the grunge boom of the early and mid-90s. Although they are typically labeled as a punk band, throughout their eponymous debut in 1989 and 1993's Ignition, Dexter Holland (vocals), Noodles (guitar), Greg Wiesel (bass), and Ron Welty (who replaced founding member James Lilja on drums) showcased a more metal sound that set them apart from similar bands.<br>
Their slower rhythms and start-stop dynamics were used to greater effect on their third album, 1994's Smash, suggesting a significant overlap with sleeker metal groups and some of the harder grunge bands. In particular, the singles Come Out And Play and Self Esteem caught the attention of those whose heads had gone crazy over Nirvana's Nevermind. Inevitably, a bidding war erupted, and the band left Epitaph Records to move to the big leagues, much to the dismay of many of their punk peers.
The Offspring's first album on Columbia was Ixnay On The Hombre. While reviews were mixed, it charted higher in the UK than its predecessor and All I Want became the band's highest-charting single to date, reaching number 31.
The band's often overlooked sense of humor came to the fore on their fifth album, the successful Americana. Pretty Fly (For A White Guy) saw them mock the whimsical cultural appropriation by suburban teenagers with a Latin-flavored alternative rock sound. It proved to be a huge hit, reaching number 1 in ten countries, including the UK. The second single, Why Don't You Get A Job?, came close, peaking at number 2.
The Offspring continued mixing punk, alternative rock, grunge, and metal on their sixth album, Conspiracy Of One, which found them in a legal dispute with their own label when the band attempted to release it online for free. Welty left the band shortly after and was replaced for the sessions of their seventh album, Splinter, by Josh Freese (Vandals, Devo).
Atom Willard from Rocket From The Crypt joined the band on drums, but was replaced by Pete Parada from Saves The Day before sessions for their next album. In 2008, the band released Rise And Fall, Rage And Grace, followed by Days Go By in 2012. Greg Kriesel left the band in 2018, finally replaced on bass by their touring guitarist Todd Morse.
In 2020, news began circulating that The Offspring was working on a new album. The band released two cover versions that year, of Joe Exotic's Here Kitty Kitty and Darlene Love's Christmas (Please Come Home).
In April 2021, the band released Let The Bad Times Roll, their first album in nine years, which reached number three on the UK chart and topped Billboard's alternative albums chart.
In May 2023, former Black Flag drummer Brandon Pertzborn replaced Josh Freese (who took the drum seat for the Foo Fighters) and touring member Jonah Nimoy became an official band member. The biggest news came in 2024 with the announcement of the new album Supercharged, released on October 11, shortly before the news of a major tour in 2025.
