About
The largest theater company in the world
Cirque du Soleil was created in Canada. In 1984, Gilles Ste-Croix and Guy Laliberté founded one of the largest artistic companies in the world. From the outset, the performances presented were at a high level. Its expansion occurred slowly. First, they began to work in the area surrounding the Quebec metropolis, in the southeast of the country. The capacity of its tent allowed an audience of a maximum of 800 spectators.
Growth of the Cirque du Soleil
Its expansion was taking the circus further west, visiting places like Ottawa or Toronto. A year later they had already acquired a tent that doubled the capacity of the previous one, with performances that had reached as far as Vancouver, in the westernmost part of Canada.
In 1987 the expansion of the circus was underway. With the show We reinvent the circus they began a tour of the United States that visited several of the largest cities in California. Just three years later, the circus moved to Europe to continue its international growth.
However, until then, the performances had been limited to the itinerant nature of these types of shows. The founders of the circus decided to make a surprising decision. In 1993 they settled in Las Vegas with the Mystère show. They built a theater adapted to their needs and began to achieve great success in the state of Nevada. Almost 30 years later, they have already exceeded 13,000 performances, maintaining the same staging.
The international expansion of the Cirque du Soleil seemed unstoppable. The company established, as of 1997, its headquarters in Montreal. In addition, the positive experience in Las Vegas motivated new permanent shows. One of them was installed at the Bellagio casino in Las Vegas and another at Walt Disney World Resort (Orlando). The first is an aquatic show that has a large capacity pool, with almost 6,000 cubic meters of water.
Greatest hits
Maintaining the Canadian origins of the company, in 2005 they were in charge of organizing the opening ceremony of the World Swimming Championships held in Montreal. They prepared the show Reflections in Blue, exclusive for this event.
One of the company's greatest successes took place between 2011 and 2014. During that time, the Michael Jackson Immortal Tour grossed over $370 million. It became Cirque du Soleil's most ambitious project. Thanks to this, it was positioned as the eighth tour with the highest collection in the history of music. In total, this show added 501 performances in 141 different cities. Nearly half, 245, took place in North America.
In recent years, the circus management has continued to innovate with the opening of new permanent shows. Also the itinerant performances have continued their course. In 2019, Alegría was updated, a show dedicated to figure skating jumping called Axel and a show in tribute to Leo Messi, the soccer player, with the name of Messi 10.
Among its most avant-garde shows it is possible to find Luzia, inspired by Mexican culture. Also the Cirque du Soleil Crystal, which has a skating rink that delights the public or performances such as those of Alegría or Bazzar. All designed to amaze the viewer.
2022 marked a new beginning for the Cirque del Sol. Their shows Corteo, Luzia and Crystal were touring Spanish cities such as Seville, Madrid and Mallorca.
