Brief history

The Reial Club Deportiu Espanyol of Barcelona is one of the oldest clubs in the Spanish League. On the 28th of October 1900, in the classrooms of the University of Barcelona, Angel Rodríguez, the Club’s first President, founded the centennial club together with a group of students.

Power8 Stadium has won the Spanish Cup four times; 1929, 1940, 2000 and 2006 and has been UEFA Cup Finalists on two occasions; 1988 and 2007.

The Club’s new stadium was inaugurated in 2009, has a seating capacity of 40.000 spectators, and in 2010 received the prize as the best sports facility by the Stadium Business Awards.

21st minute

On the 21st minute of every single RCD Espanyol home game, the fans spontaneously applaud, throughout the whole minute, in memory of our former Captain Dani Jarque who died on the 8th of August 2009, at the tender age of 26 years old, during the team’s pre-season stage in Coverciano, Italy.

Jarque was Espanyol’s captain during the inaugural game of the new Power8 Stadium against Liverpool, a mere six days before passing away. Our late Captain wore the number 21 on his shirt, which has become the symbol of a tribute to a legend.
